More than 5.5 million tonnes of plastic waste is generated annually by the world\u2019s bioscience and clinical labs – equivalent to the weight of 27,500 blue whales, the largest creatures on the planet. These sectors accounts for 1.4% of total global plastic waste according to data from 2021, despite researchers and healthcare workers representing only a small fraction of the world\u2019s population. The scale of this waste becomes even more alarming when including other research disciplines.
